On making a pncconf config using QTplasmac I have it working apart from the keyboard jog keys.

Where should I start looking for this ?

Edit:  This was using MXmint   2.9

On the parameters tab (or settings tab depending on the screen resolution), ensure "KB Shortcuts" is checked (it is not by default).

I don't think that was in earlier versions.

One more thing unrelated. Is it possible to bring the ssd to another PC without a mesa card to get it loaded
as you know it fails without the 7i96 connected.

I make several clones with Zonzilla it makes it very fast to setup another machine.

I believe it's been there since the public inception, but it's a "set it and forget it" kind of setting, so it's easy to forget about (hence why it bites me sometimes as well :) ).  It is recorded in the .pref file though, so if you had a new machine you could place it there manually and it should work from the get-go.

You could do the behind-the-scenes config stuff, but I reckon the 7i96 card needs to be present to load LinuxCNC / GUI.
