Well there is a need to be perpendicular because if you move from 1mm to 20 mm material, the results will be a different offset if not perpendicular
If I had a 3D printer I would make a clamp that sat high on the torch the laser pressed into but to machine something, I'm a bit lazy.
This would mean the laser was always in focus right at the torch tip..

In fairness, my laser does sit against machined surfaces (a corner) known to be perpendicular to the works.  But I’d reckon you have to really try to make it cattywampus to a degree that would matter in a 19mm change of height… for a plasma starting offset.

I have this in custom_postgui.hal
# --- PLASMAC:LASER-ON ---
net plasmac:laser-on qtplasmac.laser_on => hm2_7i96.0.ssr.00.out-02

EDIT:
It would possibly be more correct to just add this line to your machine hal file (substituting the correct pin name):
net plasmac:laser-on => hm2_7i96.0.ssr.00.out-02
The config will then automatically complete the hal connection.
