Parts have arrived, here is my understanding of the wiring per 1 stepper:
meas card needs 5V supply
TB6600 should be powered with the voltage for the steppers (12V in my case to start with).

As I understand it the connections between TB6600 and mesa should be like in my bad sketch.

Looks reasonable.

One thing: never disconnect a stepper motor from the drive with the drive powered up. I don't know for sure that that will blow up a TB6600, but it's definitely not somethng that a TB6560 could survive.

If disconnecting motor from drive while powered on:
-TB6560 will die
-TB6600 will die
-TB6600 that is not TB6600 will most probably survive
The last ones use TB67S109 chip inside despite being named TB6600, it is much better but can do a bit lower current.
I have over 20 of the TB67S109 in daily use, the only issue i had with them is the DIP switches on 4 of those would switch at random from vibrations, so i soldered them.

A not properly crimped plug or semitight srew termnial might cause a problem as well?
Or does the damage only occur when all four wires are disconnected at same time?
I would guess the system does not know if I did it or it just happened.

Yes.

Any motor wire.

I would guess the system does not know if I did it or it just happened.

What system? The drive will know, motors are inductors and disconnecting powered inductors cause huge spikes that very often end in dead equipment.

With system I ment the drive and motor. They will not "know" if I pulled the plug on purpose (punishment), because I did not know better.
Or if the lost connection were due to wear and tear or insufficient assembly (not to be punished).
So my take is that I need to pay more attention to detail in the future, because I might have damaged a drive or two without beeing aware of the importance of the wiring.

Greetings Timo

A cage-clamp terminal done up nice and tight with the cable not actually inside the clamp is a popular way to blow up a drive. Give the wires a good tug after tightening the clamps.
