I need a sanity check on wiring the 7i96 Output. Field power does not come from the board so is this correct?

+24VDC -> Relay -> [Out 1+ /Out 1-] -> 24VDC Common

or

+24VDC -> [Out 1+ /Out 1-] -> Relay -> 24VDC Common

Are these correct, any preference ?

Both are correct.

If you use the second scheme you should definitely fuse the 24V supply
since a short to ground (assuming 24V common is ground)
would likely damage the 7I96 output

Note that you should have flyback diodes across the relay coils

modern relay industrial supply most got the diodes inside
and even the industri Rail sockel relais got safty diodes both ways

No they do not, over 90% of them do not have them built in.
AC relays can not have them anyway you look at it. DC ones rarely have them.

How exactly should a relay *module* like this one be wired up ? (SAFELY)

www.amazon.com/HiLetgo-Channel-Module-Is...id=1597203703&sr=8-3

On the control side it looks like it has a DC+, DC-, and IN pins.

With an arduino it is very straight forward but with the 7i96 it's a relay firing another relay and has my slightly confused and I'm not following the path for either of OP's schemes. Maybe they're not using a relay board like I've shown?

A very quick sketch would be extremely helpful.

Connect gnd and IN to the mesa board, they just need the input to gnd to switch over.
In case it does not work, reverse the gnd and in pins.

I appreciate the answer but now I'm even more confused...

Using this pic can you connect all the necessary wires that are needed to safely run a relay module of this type?

Look like it would be wired
+24V --> DC+ 7I96 OUT+
0V --> DC-
7I96 OUT- --> IN

Though a plain relay would be sinpler

Like this? Also, can you specify a plain relay you would prefer?

I was thinking of simple DIN rail mounted relays but they seem to be more
expensive unless you buy direct from China
