Good thoughts, Robert, not dopey at all. The 7i76 is brand new, and both LEDs are lit.

Pins 22-25 on the 5i25 P3 are GND, so I know it's not sending 5v to the 7i76. I'm putting 5V directly into the 7i76. The 7i76 is successfully driving the Gecko 203v drivers, which I take as evidence it's got 5V correctly.

I don't know how to test the 7i76 unfortunately. I'll probably just send both it and the 5i25 back to Peter and let Mesa do their magic.

is W2 on the 7i76 in the right hand or left hand position (should be in the right)

on the 5i25 W1 and W2 should be DOWN. if you are powering the 7i76 seperatly.

W3 should be UP on the 5i25

I suspect that W2 on the 7i76 is on the left..... and preventing the FPGA having a power supply....

if in doubt... remove the jumper on W2 on the 7i76 all together and power it up as this then does not set the status to pins 22 to 25 at all otherwise one way grounds them and the other tries to send 5v down / or expects 5v back from them.

pins 22 to 25 will just float.

I suspect that the short circuit protection circuit is kicking in on the 7i76 and is preventing the FPGA on the 7i76 from running.... because jumpers w2 and w1 are down on the 5i25..... which is basically linking pins 22-25 to ground...... causing a short circuit.

it's just a guess though

Upload hal and ini files, maybe the sserials are not loaded there.
What does the loadrt line with 5i25 in it say?

Thanks Robert. Attached are photos of my two boards - I think all jumpers are correct.

Thanks Tommy. I've attached the .hal and .ini files, as well as the output when I try to run linuxcnc. If I comment out line 29, which links hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.input-04, then linuxcnc loads perfectly and I can jog the axes.
