Thanks, too!
I had the same issue and solved it by using another USB port.

First it was on the back side and then it was on the top - works fine.

...still have the same problem, but I'm using an SD-card as a reader and don't have a second SD-card slot...

Any advise?

When you get the cd-rom message, try ejecting the card and reinserting it. That worked for me with a usb drive.

Also, the source of my problem was the options I chose when using the Rufus program to create the bootable drive. Selecting the dd method instead of the recommended iso method worked without problems.

Here is another link discussing this same issue: Not possible to install LinuxCNC 2.8 from USB stick?

Thanks - Had the same issue where I could not get past the "Insert CDROM" prompting with a USB boot and I don't have a DVD/CDROM.
Swapping the boot USB stick into another USB port when prompted for the DVD/CDROM worked well.
