I would quote him a reasonable price for half the job and request hourly wage at your discretion.
Write a contract and protect yourself with hidden issues like: parts, pieces not working etc. Proprietary software in plc's if you don't have access will be extra if you have to redo it with reliable cheap plc new tech type inexpensive.

You have to take the responsibility off yourself if it will not work because of proprietary software or existing equipment failures etc....

If they want that machine bad enough which I think they do since they spent 350K???, then great, otherwise send them to your competitor....

just my 2 cents,

I did a job for a customer that I made them sign a waiver that I wasn't responsible for any existing equipment or software or the machine being operative in the end.

They wanted it bad enough and they paid. I did get it working in the end, but there was a chance I didn't. Both of us won.

That is exactly what should normally be done, alas, the contracts are not worth their wight in paper here.
Non the less, i will try to do something like that, and if they complain, i will just decline.
Thank you.

If you do end up doing this, please post a thread on it. To retrofit a 28m industrial line with hundreds of actuators and sensors is a hell of a job to do solo.

Ask for down payment half up front. Then they pay by hour. So if they don't pay, don't work.

Will do for sure, even if they do not allow me to take pictures, i will try to describe things as best as i can, still working on doing a better job at explaining things. I was very bad at it! :)
