Do you have the following files in your config directory?
tkapp.py (2.4 only)
ngcgui_app.tcl
ngcgui.tcl
ngcgui_ttt.tcl

Yes all those files are there. I note that my ini file is not directly in the config directory but is in Taig-mill which is a sub directory of configs which is in emc2. Could that be the problem?. emc2 created Taig-mill itself when I used Stepconf to set it up.

Yes, that would be the problem if the ngcgui files are not in the same directory as the ini file.

So when instructions say copy to config I should copy to directory with ini file?

Yep, they need to go in the same directory as your ini file /configs/Taig-mill not in the /configs directory.

John,
SUCCESS Many thanks - If stepconf always sets up a subdirectory it may be worth modifying instructions for benefit of others
Many thanks

John,
I spoke too soon, although it worked for simple which has no tool with slot which has tool 1 it fails with message
near line63 of
/home/john/emc2/configs/Taig-mill/auto.ngc: Unable to open file <loadtool>
I haven't been asked to set any tool parameters yet. is this something in emc I have missed or is it from ngcgui?

Yep, me too... you need to copy in_std.ngc and loadtool.ngc to your nc_files directory.
