Hi Andy,
The result is 2.6.32- 122-rtai

I had a problem with the rtai when I was trying to do the original install, so perhaps it's still wrong ?

John

Edit - I should have added at the start that I'm only using EMC2 on this laptop to check out my g code give me the expected tool path in Axis before transferring to my workshop system.

No, that looks like the right kernel.

I've repeated the process, but this time started to read the contents of the error window.

In the Debug file information, it suggests going to the wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?LockedMemory page.

Followed that advice, and there it says

Solution
Edit /etc/security/limits.conf with your favorite text editor (e.g., sudo gedit /etc/security/limits.conf). Add the following line

* - memlock 20480

I tried that, but my Terminal responded with " command not found".

So I went into my file system to /etc/security/limits.conf and it has at the bottom of the file

#@student - maxlogins 4

# End of file
* hard memlock 20480 #EMC2

(I note that the spacing of the text I have put here isn't exactly the same as appears in the file, but I assume that is irrelevant.)

Not being familiar with the way the file should be edited, I left well alone, and have come back for further help and advice.

John

EDIT I see that the /security/limits.conf is a read only file. Relevant ?

To temporarily raise the limit for the current session, use the following command:

ulimit -l 20480

Is this line to be done in terminal, as an alternative to editing the limits.conf file ?
Looks more appropriate to my needs ?

Sounds like memlock is already at the right value, so it probably isn't that.

Looking round the forums, I think it is one of the manifestations of this problem:
wiki.linuxcnc.org/emcinfo.pl?TroubleShoo..._t_run_missing_lapic

I've read the link, thanks for that. Added a bit more to my small knowledge base :)

Ran dsmeg | less, and extracted the following -

[ 0.000000] ACPI: Local APIC address 0xfee00000
[ 0.000000] ACPI: LAPIC (acpi_id[0x00] lapic_id[0x00] enabled)
[ 0.000000] ACPI: LAPIC_NMI (acpi_id[0x00] high edge lint[0x1])
[ 0.000000] ACPI: IOAPIC (id[0x01] address[0xfec00000] gsi_base[0])
[ 0.000000] IOAPIC[0]: apic_id 1, version 32, address 0xfec00000, GSI 0-23
[ 0.000000] ACPI: INT_SRC_OVR (bus 0 bus_irq 9 global_irq 9 high level)
[ 0.000000] ACPI: IRQ9 used by override.

so I assume lapic is OK ?

That would be my interpretation, but I am a long way out of my depth here.

and I'm treading water, too.

John
EDIT As a "fingers crossed" trial, I've just run the code ulimit -l 20480 in Terminal, then tried running EMC2, but it made no difference.
The error window spells out exactly the same fault.

I've just found a thread on the cncZone/EMC forum, where the op has a slightly similar problem.
He's discovered that he had several linux kernels which might be conflicting, though this wasn't his final solution. (He has both 10.04 and 10.10 installed)

So I used synaptic to see what I had, and found the following :

Package linux-image-2.6.24-16-rtai Installed 2.6.24-16.30.linuxcnc.4

Package linux-image-2.6.32-122-rtai Installed 2.6.32-122.35.rtai

Package linux-image-2.6.32-32.generic Installed 2.6.32-32.62

Do I have any potential problems here ?

Andy, I think the time is rapidly approaching when I take your advice, and start again with a liveCD version.

I've just downloaded it, but knowing that my laptop has graphics issues(has the Intel 855 chip onboard) I've got quite a bit of preparation to do before I start.

Bye for now,

John
