I have just done a fresh install of Debian on another partition and cloned the emc software again, I had to create one symlink libXmu.so.6 -> libXmu.so and emc2 compiles fine with no errors.

The basic problem is caused by upgrading the Debian binutils from 2.20.1-16 to 2.21.90.20111004, but I think the real problem is caused by something else pulled in as a dependency because downgrading back to the original does not fix the build process.
