If you still have a problem after trying that you can also try installing 8.04 instead.
8.04 seems to install with less problems on more computers and you can still run the latest version of EMC2 on it.

Thanks Rick G - I will be fooling with this later this week. One thing which escaped me (I should know better) is that the particular machine on which I am attempting the install is using an on-board video. I missed this and I will install a cheapie PCI video card
and see what changes.

Hi,
One thing which escaped me (I should know better) is that the particular machine on which I am attempting the install is using an on-board video. I missed this and I will install a cheapie PCI video card
There is nothing wrong with on-board video per se, it depends entirely upon the chipset.
All my computers have Intel MBs with integrated video and work fine.
You will need to solve the LAPIC problem before you can even start to do latency tests to see if video is likely to be problematic.
One problem at a time, on the alternative way lies madness!!!

Thanks again ArcEye - that's good to know. Let me bring you up to speed on what I am trying to accomplish. I have a friend wanting to explore EMC from a part programmers view - how does it handle comp. etc. I gave him the latest live CD which played fine on my machine (a generic box which I assembled) just running it from the CD. When he tried it on his machine (HP Pavilion XL 759) it puked. I then decided to build him a separate Liunx box from another older Pavilion I had laying around - it has a P3 running at 800MHZ.. Running also from the live CD it puked so I decided to try a full install on the HD and that's where all the problems surfaced as outlined in my original post. I will struggle with the LAPIC thing anyway just to learn - I don't even know what LAPIC is.

Thanks John - is there a 'live CD' with 8.04 available? My knowledge of Linux is quite limited and I may have difficulty in loading EMC into an 8.04 install.
Thanx
