do i have to have z limit switches installed because all i have on the z is the float switch

Not really, it will work without them, granted you did not set them in the original machine config.

no i did not my 7i96 is showing the up and down movement with the led lights from the thc but the on screen is not showing the up and down but it is showing the ark okay also how to i get it to test the float switch i told it to cut a sample file and the z never moved

Compress the config folder and attach it here, also some screenshot occasionally and a picture of the wiring would help.
To test the float switch just move it by hand while looking at the float LED on screen.

as for the z float switch it dose not change on the screen by moving it up and down with my hand but i can get it to blink if i run it down with jog here is a copy of my hal and ini files as for how by board is wired

Are you homing your machine before operating it?
Could you compress the complete Nathan_Plasma2 directory and post it.
EDIT: You also would be better off posting in the PlasmaC section of the forum for PlasmaC specific topics. forum.linuxcnc.org/plasmac
