Got a bit more work done on the machines control panel. All of the buttons I currently want in it are wired in to the 7i73 so I just need to update the .hal file to use the new inputs on the button matrix. Still plan on adding buttons if needed as well as integrating my MPG and axis selector switch etc. to the panel but for now it is all wired up short of the drive enable and estop as that stuff is in the garage and I am in the house

You are making good progress. Once you have it all running, I will have to use your HAL and Ini to upgrade my machine to 2.9

That seems like a fair trade haha, currently watching videos on the 7i73 to modify the hal for all the buttons. also just designed a rough draft pendant

Not a lot changed between 2.8 and 2.9 (2.7 to 2.8 was the big shift)

The updater script _should_ handle any necessary HAL changes. You are making good progress. Once you have it all running, I will have to use your HAL and Ini to upgrade my machine to 2.9

been having some trouble with getting my 7i73 keyboard matrix to interact with the machine. could be just a me issue, it is currently abouyt 32 degrees f and I cant feel my hands out here. tried searching for answers and gotr some but the buttons dont do anything in either halshow or halscope. I have attached my hal files that involve the matrix.

rewatching rotary-smp's video on his schaublin panel I think I see my issue. I had wired the diodes for sourcing current but he mentions that it is sinking current so I need to flip my inputs and outputs to fix that like he had to in his video. I did try to bypass one buttons diode with no luck but perhaps swapping all of the around will solve this

You can typically not bother with diodes if you don't need to press more than one button at a time.

I swapped around the inputs and outputs and that solved the issue. I was able to get all the buttons to function. I spent a while working on getting the gmoccapy jog buttons to move the axis but for some reason the only way I was able to get any of the axis to move outside of homing is to use the halshow to select the axis for jogging. Tried tying the ui pins to the pos and neg axis pins. Also almost done with the pendant with the mpg just need the rotary switches and wiring

Try connecting the jogs to the motion pins:
linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man9/m....9.html#JOINT%20PINS
linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man9/m...n.9.html#AXIS%20PINS
You will need to connect up the joint.N.jog.... pins to jog before homing and the axis.L.jog... pins to jog after homing.
(An advantage of doing it this way is that you are jogging entirely in the realtime layer)

That sounds like you are jogging with axis-selected in halui.the only way I was able to get any of the axis to move outside of homing is to use the halshow to select the axis for jogging.

I finally got around to wiring up and adding the logic for my pendant and it now jogs. I even messed with the PID well mostly P so the axis actually move at a reasonable speed without tripping out. This is going super well, I just need to work out a small scaling issue. Seems like it moves about 90% of the command in real life so my encoder counts are likely off. The last big hurdle is getting the gear shifting logic to function and then I'll be off to the races with being able to machine some parts with it. The conversion had a small interruption of purchasing a bum tractor that needed some major work but that is mostly behind me now and I have a bit more room to mess with the mill again.
