i can't see/find where/how to make the image_bit pin in hal.

The pin is made in the xml file. If you copied and pasted that from the pdf you will have change the single back quote ` to double qoutes " or it will crash EMC.

i know it's made in the xml, but doesn't it need to be
connected to a signal in the hal file ? i think i'm not
being clear again. sorry.

No problem, yes it does need to be connected to signal in your post gui hal file.

but that's what i've been trying to say.

i'm having trouble seeing where to link 'selectimage' to halui.machine.is-on in the hal file for the sig.
do i use 'selectimage' or the whole thing <image_bit halpin='selectimage' images='on off'/> ?
what to use as the <halpin> ???? </halpin> ?
<halpin> 'selectimage' </halpin> ?????
i meant i have no idea what the pin is.

I always just open up the Show Hal Configuration window and look at the pins to make sure the spelling is correct and the pin didn't get something weird added to it.

i did...can't find anything like "image" ... "selectimage" ...image_bit.
looked online also. will keep looking. Thanks !

it worked ok. but it didn't seem right. so i changed the double quotes.
