I've been doing some testing and every PC I have running a 5.x kernel gives the dreaded hm2/hm2_7i96s.0: error finishing read. I just built master on Debian 10 and I'm running a config with the 7i96S. I ran the 2.8.3 out_m branch for a few days on the 7i96S and no error. Same PC with Debian 11 - 13 I get the hm2/hm2_7i96s.0: error finishing read. The Debian 10 drive is running 4.19.0-21-rt-amd64 kernel.

Do we need to start building our own kernels again?

I have had the same issue on my test PC with 5.X kernels
and a 1 KHz servo thread. Unfortunately I think there is a major
regression in network latency on 5.X kernels. So for now
running Ethernet cards may require using 4.X kernels or lower
servo thread rates. (unless a fix is found)

It does seemed to be fixed on 6.0 kernels

Is there a 6.0 RT kernel for testing yet?

There's a preempt-rt patch for 6.0:

uname -a
Linux peter-HP-EliteDesk-800-G1-USDT 6.0.0-rc1-rt2 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Sat Aug 20 16:46:37 PDT 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I think the latest patch is for 6.0.0-rc5-rt7 (09/13)

I should note that the 5.XX kernel network latency
issues seem to be hardware specific as I have had
no issues with a 5.18 kernel on my HP 8300 USDT

I can confirm i had no issues on HP 8200 and 8300 with 5.nn kernels, one is in use about once a week.
Also no issues on a Dell 980, and 9020, not sure the exact models.

Yeah, wish I knew what the issue was.

I can actually run a 4 KHz servo thread on my 8300 with a 7I96S + 5.18 kernel
(not sure how long but I have it running now with a 10 hour youtube fireplace video)

I think all my PC's have Realtek network adapters.

I'll have to test with a RTK MAC but the issues I had did not seem to be
MAC related
(5.x has bad latency on an HP Elite 800 but OK and a 8300, both with Intel MACs)

How can you upgrade to a 6.0 kernel?
I have the same issue...
