For a DC motor you would need a reed switch and wind some 5-10 times one of the motor cables around it (not both), wire the reed switch to any input and set it in hal as limit switch or probe.

Yes for a DC motor, no (at least not easy at all) for steppers. Is it possible to use stall force tolerance for z axis home and detecting the sheet metal in qtplasmac?

In the hypertherm microedge software that currently controls the table has encoder polarity and dac polarity set to negative for one of the y axis and x axis. Would I need to change the wiring I have going to the 7i97t to reflect that and would that be causing some of my issues?

There is a basic setup error in the hal file: all PWMgens must be set to use offset mode
for the 7I97/7I97T. Here is an example from the basic7I97 configuration:

I don't see an option anywhere in pnnconf to set pwmgens to offset mode. Is that something I would have to manually add to hal?
Also what are some tuning settings to use for the servos to get started?

Yes, you would have to set it manually in HAL, something like:
setp hm2_7i97.0.pwmgen.00.offset-mode true
setp hm2_7i97.0.pwmgen.00.offset-mode true

I am getting an error on startup after adding the lines about offset mode. I attached error report and current hal.
Machine jogs around well. Its when I hit the power button in qtplasmac that enables the motors that they move/jump a little bit. Offset mode would correct/dampen that I assume?

At the very top of your hal file, there is some symbol that does not belong there, seem like '

You guys rock. Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was editing hal with libre office instead of text editor. Added the line about offset mode and now the servos are quiet and don't move or jump when enabled.

You are welcomed, always.
And as a general rule, edit machine files only with simple text editors, anything else will add special characters to the files making a mess.

Great info as always. Thank you.
Setting up inputs now, getting an error on startup again related to inputs. It states input pins do not exist. Is this a common problem? Did I miss a simple step on configuring the 7i97t?
