With the matrix I would have enough gpios,
But they are completely unprotected, against ESD, EMI, or just me
The 7i92 also sits in the back of the machine.
The cables to the buttons would be very long, and run parallel to the feed lines of the servos.
I think this is not a good combination.
Although I have read a bit on the subject
www.digikey.com/en/articles/protecting-i...-digital-electronics
But I think a 7i73 directly under the panel is surely the cleaner and much simpler solution than a protection circuit on a further board...
so it will probably be a 7i73

Good news
Traced the original emergency stop chain and scissored it.
I think I understand the circuit and how it interacts with the controller.
Could even test the Simodrive with a 0-5V voltage source, spindle servo and X-axis servo worked
I haven't tested the Z axis yet, would like to remove the drive belt first....
How can I check if the direction of the three-phase current to the machine is correct?
The servo motors work, but I just put the machine under power without checking it.
Next question,
How was such a machine homed, with the original control?
The machine has no glassrulers and I have also found no switches on the axes.
Feedback comes from rotary encoders on the spindles, which would have an index signal.
I wanted to mount switches and then reference in combination with the encoders.
Go till limit switch, then back till index signal.
but how was this done on the original machine.
or was there no homing provided?

the panel is not 100% protected against chips from behind.
Today I printed a small case for the 7i76.
I uploaded the stl files on thingiverse.
