7i92 + bob was created by Ondrej
Hello,

I have mesa card 7i92 and I want to use it with chinese  5axis bob. Iam prepared to follow this steps forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuratio...rallel-port-bob-g540 for pncconf.  Iam scared of doing some damage to the card, so I want to know if there is something to avoid if you know. Also, can you please tell me that the 5V place on the mesa is terminal for connecting power supply? I saw some photos where people have connected two wires but also running without connection - because If understand well, there is written its 5V power supply (5V Power) connector for BOB.

thanks

Yes, that is how you supply 5V power to the 7I92

The 5 Axis BOBs also need 5V, either from their USB connector
or from the terminal block on the BOB.

The BOB and 7I92 should be powered from the same 5V source

Thx PCW for fast answer.You mean same 5V source - my solution for this is in the picture. I use 5V USB power from PC and connect it to the BOB. Then from the BOB I connect that to mesa. I can measure 4,9V when just trying to see how much it does, but to be honest I dont trust to this solution.Do you think it will be bad if I connect BOB to 5V from the PC and use separated power supply for mesa?  Also, according to the pnconf configuration from the forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuratio...rallel-port-bob-g540 I dont know what pin is related to the real BOB pin. I saw there is some firmware called 7i92_5abob but I absolutely dont know what to do with that. - I just have downloaded it from the mesa store in zip file.
 also sorry for my english im from cz...

I would stay with the USB power since its current limited so
a misconnect will not result in disaster.

To use that firmware file you would type:

mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 192.168.1.121 --write 7i92_5abob.bit

(assuming the 7I92 IP address is set for 192.168.1.121)

then power cycle the 7I92 or type:

mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 192.168.1.121 --reload

To load the FPGA with the firmware written to EEPROM in the
previous command.

So you mean to use connection as showed in picture? The +5V from the BOB is also shared with stepper drivers, there wont be any high voltage drop / possibility to damage mesa card, if I connect it like this?   there will be 4x stepper drivers.

That should be fine, the 5V to the step drives should just be going to the
drives optocouplers (no connection the the step motor power at all)

again thanks PCW.

next question before I try with power. - I assume the mesaflash commands you wrote I have to do with connected and powered mesa card.
And lastly - I recognized that I actually dont know what will mesaflash help me with. If I understand well the mesaflash is just something that help me with programming but there wont be any 5abob firmware in the pnconf, right?

Iam thinking about connecting everything, powering it up, load mesaflash, start doing pnconf (but here I still wont know what pin is what even with mesaflash 5abob?), and then somehow changing .hal and .ini files? Or I can know these pins even when doing pnconf?

Mesaflash mainly is used to program Mesa FPGA cards with the desired firmware.

To use the7I92 with your breakout board, you must first program the
card with firmware designed for that particular breakout board.

Pncconf does not have direct support for the 5ABOB firmware, but to a large
extent, this does not matter as the firmware will get the pin mapping correct
for things like stepgens and PWMgens. You just need to select a similar breakout
(like the G540).

The 5ABOB firmware maps the stepgens to 5ABOB pins
in the expected:

0=X
1=Y
2=Z

order

Note: you can get the pinout reference for a 5ABOB with this mesaflash command:

mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 192.168.1.121 --readhmid --dbname1 5ABOB

My Mesa Configuration Tool supports 7i92 5ABOB... and will flash the 7i92 and much more.

thanks JT I will try it on another mesa, when I get more experienced. Now I have again problem. Today I tryied everything with power. When I type mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 192.168.1.121 --write 7i92_5abob.bit the terminal answers No 7i92 board found. I tried to search something on the internet, I read linuxcnc.org/docs/ja/html/man/man9/hm2_eth.9.html - I dont how this can help me. Then I saw it can be network configuration problem - I think it will, but Iam not able to get into "Edit connections..." in network icon on the top right corner of monitor - it does nothing. Also I have photo of ip a command. The mesa card ip adress is as default (192.168.1.121)
