If you do have a wired connection available, you can just add a
USB<-->Ethernet dongle for the general purpose network interface

Yes I know but I am on a very low budget here on my pension so I will have to try all options I have in house.

A friend of mine had one with him yesterday for me to test, lsusb will not see this USB2LAN adapter at all as was with new modern USB WiFi dongles.
So it looks like I will have to use wired connection when needed for updates etc in future.

To really see what is going on you need to check the output of dmesg after plugging the device in.
Saying linux does not "see" a device is lacking information. A manufacturer\model FCCID can help with initial problem solving.
Just because USB wifi does not connect does not mean it's an issue with Linux.....it could be a config issue, that's why the output of dmesg is very important.

I have Linux installed with Swedish settings, so I will go down shortly to my workshop and copy that message and write from down there.
