If you launch LinuxCNC from the command line,
does it say:

"Note: Using POSIX realtime" ?

You may have missed the part where you select "Fully Preemptable Kernel"
in the configuration editor (or forgot to save the modified config file)

But I stll get hm2/hm2_7i96.0: error finishing read

I had this same issue and it went away after I changed the servo period to 2000000. I didn't try find out why as it seems to work ok at this servo period.

This is mine after 48 hours:

Below is a link to my complete /boot directory. The elf files are for the beta bootloader discussed here

So a question.

Is it that easy to fix a new Buster on SD and copy your /boot (not cmdline.txt as I stil want to run on SD until I get SSD)?

It won't give you the full Buster, only the realtime kernel.

I think if you copy:
overlays directory
*.dtbfiles
kernel7l-rt.img
config.txt
cmdline.txt

it should work.

Of course keep backups of your originals
