So under [pi4] I tried to comment out but then it would not start color splash

I have a feeling all this is a graphics problem.

My setup is µHDMI to normal HDMI/VGA adapter to VGA display.
That chain works with *normal* Buster.

I will soon be out a couple of hours, need my feet to be taken care of chiropody

Tried all graphics related settings in config.txt

It makes one a bit puzzled, the only diff is that you have 2GB version and I have the 4GB and that should not make any difference.

I am thinking of getting a touchscreen, headless on LinuxCNC is a little bit clunky. What do you think of the waveshare that you have?

EDIT: What resolution is it?

I did my testing on an official 3A PSU from Raspberry, it is currently running on a 3A MeanWell PSU.

I'm really happy with this screen from 2 years.
(have some problem at first attempt with a dead board and after that with a updated board that does not work with Beaglebone hdmi non standard detection but seller send me 2 time replacement boards and help debugging greatly)

I thinks now is better to use a 15" but except that this screen work fine ! (including hdmi audio)

The touchscreen work better with RPI original DM (openbox) than mate (i can't click on the different menu from task bar.
I never found a correct configuration for use multitouch or twofing for some right click.

The goal is now to print a case for fit all in one RPI/screen/keyboard and have a easily removable panel with only ethernet and power to unplug for sharing with other machine.

Resolution is fiull HD 1920x1080

I am back to you last image of today. buster-rt.img

pi@pi4-mate:~ $ uname -a
Linux pi4-mate 4.19.71-rt24-v7lrt+ #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Mon May 18 16:17:58 AE20 armv7l GNU/Linux

This I get via PUTTY so it is booting but I get no graphics. Did run raspi-config just to assure VNC is enabled but no contact.
