A J3455 based system (basically the J1900 replacement) should be OK
A RPI 4 is another option

Also HP 8300 USDTs have a (very quiet) fan but are small and fast and work well
with LinuxCNC and are available in the $100 region with 4 to 8G of RAM and a good
sized hard drive.

+1 for the J3455 if you can get hold of one. I know they a little difficult to get in Australia, but just about anything is at the best of times, might be easier if you live on the other side of the earth. I use one myself and the Asrock boards have a Legacy\CSM mode to boot from. I threw an extra NIC to access my home network as the on board one is connected to my 7i92.

I left mine on for about a month over the summer (+40'C alot of days)vand never had a heat issue, when idle nor when machining, and this is with the board in a 1U case.

Are all the previous issues of it with Mesa card 7i96e to run Linux CNC resolved?

Where ?
None on ebay au. Only listings are international.

And FFS if you are going to quote a post of mine don't edit it so it make no [insert_string_of_aussie_expletives] sense.

And if I wanted to run a Atom I have a Atomic Pi and a Acer Aspire One at hand.....and neither are what you would call fantastic.

Really don't know much issues about RP4, Just by reading some posts stating that the Ethernet connection is complicated; latency issue is critical. Can it smoothly run 5 axis and also load the screens; like QtPyVCP ? Actually I firstly prefer to buy to it instead of a mini computer. It is because I just learnt Raspberry and Python and want to have this board to practice as well, I used to do my electronic in Arduino and microchip MCU. Now, I still can't make up my mind to buy which!

The Ethernet setup is not particularly complicated, you do need to setup a static IP address
on the host, but this is identical to x86 systems. The RPI4 is comparable speed wise with
J1900/J3455 systems but its Ethernet is not fast enough to run a 1 KHz servo thread
reliably. I will run a 500 Hz servo thread which is fine for most stepper motor lathe and mill
applications. The "smoothness" of the motion is not related to latency, as long as the servo
thread scheduling is always met with some margin (say no more than 1 ms latency on a 2 ms servo thread)

Damn you beat me to it. I posted about that little beastie the other day. Interested in to see how it goes.

That's why I bought it. I watched the vid Although I have never dual booted before I would like to try it with win10 and linuxcnc. I will have to wait as the shipping is 20-30 days
