For that follow the easiest is to use the depreciated Wheezy ISO
linuxcnc.org/downloads/
Beware that it is not supported anymore.

There should be RTAI kernel for 32bit, works for parallel and Mesa PCI and PCI-E cards, will not work for ethernet cards.
My client is a 32bit... is there an linux-image-rt-blabla32 ?

In all honesty, if you are using a 64 bit PC, I highly recommend MX Linux from this guide, and not the LinuxCNC distributed ISO.
Laptops in general are not recommended for linuxcnc though...

7i96 is nice for plasma but I personally would go with a 7i76e if you have a spindle.I will give it a go then.

Thanks for this guide! I've run into a hitch, I wondered if anyone else had? When I clone mesaflash and run make, I get the error
"Makefile:61: ***"pkg-config can't find libcrypto". Stop."
I have libcrypto++6 and libcrypto++-dev installed.
Output from uname -a is
Linux novakon 4.19.0-18-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Debian 4.19.208-1 (2021-09-29) X86_64 GNU/Linux
Any pointers are greatly appreciated! I'm not sure where else this dependency might live. Openssl is also installed.

EDIT: the above is a result of changes to the Mesaflash install steps.
The install guide has been updated, but you can find the latest instructions here: github.com/LinuxCNC/mesaflash#readme
Follow the "Quickstart:" section.

I am giving this a shot to replace the Debian 11 install I was playing with previously. After going through the complete installation, removing the USB drive and clicking Finish the machine fails to reboot, I tried several times with the same result, it just loads the bios screen says no OS is on the drive.
This is on the newest version of the Source Forge link in the guide, MX 21.2? wildflower?
