1. Do you have field power to the 7I71? (you should get a red fault light if powered)
2. How is the serial cable 7I71 connected to your system?
3. What is the hm2_pci or hm2_eth driver command line?
for rodw's question - I am wired as 568-B
for PCW in order-
1. Yes I have 24 volt field power connected. ( yes I do have the red light on )
2. see diagram
3. I think what your looking for is
loadrt hm2_eth board_ip="10.10.10.10" config=" num_encoders=1 num_pwmgens=0 num_stepgens=5 sserial_port_0=00xxxx"
This profile was as simple as possible to eliminate as many variables as I could. Hence the sserial_port_0=00xxxx

Do you have a Rev. C 7I76E?
If you changed the firmware from the built-in firmware you may
need to update it from the support zip file (fetched recently)
The 7I76E Rev C adds RS-485 capability to the built in serial port
so needs updated firmware. The pre-installed firmware should work
but if it was changed, you may not have the latest firmware that
supports the serial ports drive enable option.

However I haven't changed it's firmware from what it was shipped with.
does the 7i76e try to rewrite the info on the 7i71's PIC?
If so that would explain why it first worked on the PnP's 6i25 / 7i76
before I tried connecting later that day to my 7i76e that I have at home and when I tried the next day
to use it on the PnP it no longer would give me the blinking green led.
I have never updated firmware on any of my mesa card's . Is that were the " minimal host pc adapter " comes in that's
mentioned in the manual?
My Avatar on Linuxcnc may say elite but I am still very much a noobie.

the utility "setsserial"
Have you changed any 7I71 jumpers from default?
The PC adapter is no longer needed. We used to use it to change EEPROM
settings in the cards and update firmware before we could do this via the
FPGA card and Linux.

I think it is about time you change that cable.

Each machine has it's own cable . The board worked when I had first connected it to the PnP 6i25 / 7i76 setup.tommylight post=214791 userid=17274

when I took the board home to work with it some more I used a fresh new cable connected to the 7i76e board.
from there all the 7i71 has done is shown the red led . Now no mater which machine it is hooked to it will only
show the red led. As an aside anytime I transport a circuit board I put it in one of those pink non-static bags.

PCW post=214790 userid=481No, the host will never try to change the 7I71 firmware unless you run
the utility "setsserial"

When I had received the board jumpers W2 and W3 were in the UP position( Weird ). Before I connected the board to anything I
moved W2 and W3 back to their default DOWN position. Other then that I haven't moved any of the jumpers.

W2 and W3 don't actually do anything so that doesn't matter ( only W4 is functional and must be upWhen I had received the board jumpers W2 and W3 were in the UP position( Weird ). Before I connected the board to anything I
moved W2 and W3 back to their default DOWN position. Other then that I haven't moved any of the jumpers.
for normal operation )
A red LED means the firmware is OK and a watchdog fault has been generated
which is expected when there are no host communications. You should also have a yellow
field power LED illuminated.
Basically the symptoms are that there is no communications, but it could also
be that a fault is present.
Can you start LinuxCNC from a command line to see if there is any additional
information reported? (not sure which GUI you are running and not all
report all errors)
